Since 2024
The Model Micro Hydro
The Khamari Khola MHP (53KW) promoted by AEPC was completed in 2015 AD and has been in operation since then serving with local electrification and improving local quality of life. This project was designed to electrify the local community within Babiyachaur VDC as an off-grid power system but now the national grid has reached its vicinity and the project is proposed to be net-metered with the national grid. This way, the project, the local community, and the NEA benefit from each other, and local resources are preserved.

Successful Grid Connection of Micro and Mini Hydropower Projects: Runhydro’s Latest Achievement
The grid integration of micro and mini hydropower projects in Nepal is gaining momentum, providing a reliable and sustainable energy solution. As a step forward in this direction, Runhydro Engineers Pvt Ltd has successfully completed the Supply, Delivery, Installation, Testing & Commissioning of a grid-compatible synchronizing panel, along with essential auxiliary systems such as Online UPS, Battery Bank, 11KV VCB, and TOD Metering Units. This marks a significant milestone in enhancing the reliability and efficiency of micro and mini hydropower plants connecting to Nepal’s national grid.
Introducing DLCS V1.0: Runhydro’s Advanced Grid Synchronizing Panel
The newly integrated DLCS V1.0 is a state-of-the-art synchronizing panel, developed in-house by Runhydro using high-end relays and controllers. It ensures seamless grid synchronization while maintaining strict safety and operational standards. The panel has undergone rigorous testing and verification of core functionalities, including:
✔ Ballast Load Control
✔ Generator Control & Protection
✔ Generator Excitation & Grid Synchronization
To achieve precision and reliability, DEIF GPC-3 Hydro has been utilized as the main controller and grid protection relay, ensuring safe and efficient integration with the national grid. Additionally, DLC (Digital Load Controller) by Renerconsys, Indonesia, has been deployed for ballast load management, allowing smooth load control in on-grid conditions.
Ensuring Safety and Stability: High-End Protection Systems Installed
Grid connection requires robust switchgear and protection mechanisms, and Runhydro has successfully installed and verified the following components:
✔ 11KV Switchgear (CG make outdoor VCB) – Installed with protection-class Current Transformers (CTs) and control panels as per Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) requirements.
✔ Electromagnetic Deflector – Powered by 12V SMPS from DLCS V1.0, which trips during Under-Frequency (U/F) and Over-Frequency (O/F) conditions, ensuring additional safety.
✔ Reliable Auxiliary Power Supply – A new battery bank with online UPS provides uninterrupted power to the DLCS panel and VCB panel, preventing sudden failures of sensitive electrical components.
✔ Advanced Earthing System – Newly installed earth electrodes for Generator Neutral, Transformer Neutral, VCB, Switchyard Body, Metering Units, and SPD/LA ensure a safe and stable grounding system.
Enhanced Control and Automation for Seamless Grid Synchronization
One of the standout features of DLCS V1.0 is its automatic and manual synchronization capabilities. When grid frequency and voltage conditions are stable, the system performs automatic synchronization, reducing manual operator interventions. This makes the entire process efficient and error-free.
✔ Frequency Regulation: The system maintains a frequency range of 49Hz to 51Hz for smooth grid synchronization.
✔ Smart Load Control: Both DLC and AVR are regulated by GPC-3 Hydro, receiving analog and digital inputs for precise frequency and voltage control.
✔ Improved Metering Units: Installed at the project site to facilitate the upcoming transition of local consumers to the national grid.
✔ Upgraded Excitation System: The old compound excitation system has been replaced with an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR), and the existing off-grid Electronic Load Controller (ELC) has been swapped with an on-grid DLC equipped with six thyristors for smooth load control.
Paving the Way for Future Grid-Connected Micro and Mini Hydropower Projects
With this successful installation, Runhydro Engineers Pvt Ltd continues to lead in integrating micro and mini hydropower projects with Nepal’s national grid. The DLCS V1.0 grid synchronizing panel not only ensures seamless operation but also enhances the efficiency, safety, and reliability of power systems. As Nepal moves towards a future of decentralized renewable energy, such advancements will play a crucial role in strengthening rural electrification and overall grid stability.
